“A Walhalla man remains in jail today, on a combined
$87,125.00 surety bond, after his arrest early this morning on charges that include First Degree Burglary.
37 year old William David Gunn was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center around 4:28am
today after he was arrested at the scene of a burglary on Johnson Drive near Walhalla. In relation to the
same call for service, Gunn has also been charged with one count each of Malicious Injury to Personal
Property, Resisting Arrest and Possession of Implements Capable of Being Using in a Crime.
Deputies from the Uniform Patrol Bureau were dispatched around 2:16am today to the incident location
due to reports of a burglary in progress that was called into dispatch by the property owner. When
deputies arrived on scene, they announced their presence. However, no one inside the home responded.
Additional manpower arrived on scene, including a Walhalla Police Officer, who is a K-9 handler. Law
Enforcement announced their presence once again, however, no one inside the residence responded.
After deputies received a key from the property owner, and permission from the property owner to enter
the residence, officers began unlocking the front door to the dwelling.
As officers began to make entry into the residence through the front door, Gunn exited the residence
through a back door and was taken into custody by deputies who were at the back of the residence. A
search of Gunn produced some tools that were located in his pockets.
Based upon evidence that was gathered during the investigation, Gunn told deputies that he entered the
residence to rest and to get some water. According to arrest warrants, Gunn entered the dwelling at night
without consent and with the intent to commit a crime. Gunn also has two or more prior convictions for
burglary, which under South Carolina law are criteria for a First Degree Burglary charge.
According to arrest warrants, Gunn damaged the back door of the residence in order to gain entry inside.
Arrest warrants state that Gunn did use tools he possessed to gain unlawful entry into the dwelling at
night with criminal intent.
