Better justice for the mentally ill

Better justice for the mentally ill who go through the South Carolina legal system was the reason for a summit that attracted more than 350 court officials and circuit stakeholders from the 16 judicial circuits.  Among those who spoke and offered support was the state senate president, Thomas Alexander of Walhalla.  Chief Justice Donald Beatty welcomed the attendees for a first-of-its-kind event for planning centered on improving the administration of justice for those with severe mental illness.  A new task force to be announced will have as its responsibility recommendations to pinpoint solutions to be implemented starting next year.  Beatty commented:  “Fortunately, the stigmas surrounding mental health issues are decreasing”.
