Bear sightings in Tigertown

In recent weeks, three bears have been seen in the Old Stone Church section of Clemson.  The city and the DNR are aware, and a trap has been set.  They seem to be coming out at night, likely because of the lack of rain.  As a deterrent, DNR suggests residents keep all food sources, trash, and bird feeders stowed away and out of the yard.  Generally black bears are not aggressive even when confronted by humans, but they are large, powerful, wild animals that command respect.  If you encounter a bear at close range, don’t panic.  Remain standing upright, avoid direct eye contact, back up slowly and speak in a calm, assertive, assuring voice.  Make yourself look as big as possible by waving arms.  Do not run from a bear or climb a tree.
