Bail bond set for accused shooter of deputy

It appears there’s no chance for the accused shooter of an Oconee deputy to make bail, before the multiple charges he faces reach a General Sessions court room.  County Chief Magistrate Blake Norton this morning set the bail bond for Gregory Wayne Maxwell in excess of $5 million.  At the same time, Norton declined to set bond for one of the six charges of attempted murder of law enforcement officers.  After the hearing, Circuit Solicitor David Wagner indicated the one charge for which Maxwell was denied bond is the charge of attempted murder of Corp. Lucas Watts.  Both Watts and Maxwell have been hospitalized as the result of the shootings that occurred during a car pursuit of defendant Maxwell, and this morning only Maxwell was in court – he in a wheelchair.  According to public defender John Abdalla, Maxwell is having trouble understanding the situation and, at the judge’s urging, Abdalla positioned himself next to Maxwell behind a glass partition that separated the defendant from the small courtroom inside the Oconee Law Enforcement Center.
