An advisory from South Carolina’s health agency

A spokesman for the South Carolina health agency gave the following response to 101.7/WGOG NEWS about staying safe this fall from respiratory illness:

“DHEC does not have any specific guidelines at this time related to large gatherings as a whole, as there are many factors other than number of people that impact the risk of spreading a respiratory illness, as well as the individual risk levels of individuals in attendance. For example, someone who is high risk for severe disease may choose not to attend a large gathering while someone with a lower risk level does attend. We do encourage everyone to take the following steps routinely to reduce the impacts of respiratory illnesses:

  • Wash your hands often.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze.
  • Wear a mask if you are most at risk.
  • Stay home and away from others when sick.
  • Get vaccinated for flu and COVID-19.”
