A “Wanderweg” to be a take-off from Walhalla’s founding?

A wanderweg is a fancy German name for a trail or a footpath.  Depending on the action tonight by Walhalla’s elected leaders, the greenway project might get a new name “Walhalla Wanderweg.”  Material provided to the mayor and the council refers to the city’s founding by German settlers who made their way across    the state from Charleston and states “Public input overwhelmingly suggested tying the name of the greenway to Walhalla’s German roots.”  Those roots date to Walhalla’s founding in 1850.  “When the founders laid out plans for the new home, they made sure to include green spaces that would border each side of Main Street.  These city-owned spaces that run along North and South Broad Streets have been preserved and protected from development for over 170 years. The new Greenway project,” according to the city, “will help follow through with the original vision for downtown Walhalla by creating a 3-mile loop that will encompass the historic downtown district.
