A case of thievery at an Oconee state park

Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help today in regards to an investigation into a vehicle break-in and theft that occurred in the southern part of Oconee County in late May of this year.

Deputies from the Uniform Patrol Bureau were dispatched to Hartwell State Park on S. Highway 11 near Fair Play during the evening hours of May 28th in regards to reports of a vehicle break-in and theft.  Deputies made contact with the victims, who told the deputies that they parked their vehicle in the parking lot around 2:30pm that afternoon to go down to the lake.

When they returned at 6:30pm, they discovered their vehicle had been broken into and both of their wallets had been stolen.  Among the items contained in the wallets were banking cards and credit cards.

Further investigation showed that several attempts were made to use one of the cards at the Walmart location on the Highway 28 by-pass in Anderson.

The case was turned over to the Criminal Investigations Bureau.  Based upon evidence gathered, the Investigator made contact with a store employee at the Anderson Walmart location and obtained pictures of a black male who the Sheriff’s Office is attempting to identify in relation to the case.  The male left the store in a dark in color newer SUV.
