Why drivers don’t comply with Move Over Laws

The deaths of two AAA tow providers has the motor club raising awareness of the dangers that public safety responders face on the roadside and how critical it is that drivers follow move over laws.  Glenn Ewing was killed near Cincinnati while placing a disabled vehicle on the back of a flatbed on the side of the road; David Meyer was killed helping a driver on the left-hand shoulder in Colorado when he was also struck and killed.  AAA says it is startling that 35% of South Carolina drivers, who are aware of mover over laws, do not know there is one in South Carolina.  Reasons for why these kinds of roadside accidents occur include driver distraction and not realizing there’s someone on the side of the road until it’s too late.  Impairments are another factor.  The sad reality is that drivers are increasingly distracted while behind the wheel.
