White-tailed deer tend to bolt into traffic

October to November is the time that South Carolina drivers should be especially cautious of roaming white-tailed deer.  According to the DNR, studies show that about 45% of deer-vehicle collisions occur during October to November, and it’s related to the fact deer naturally increase their movements related to breeding.  Most collisions occur near dawn and dusk because deer tend to move more during those times.  Unfortunately, that’s when most humans commute to and from work.  Although deer-vehicle collisions are an issue in South Carolina, DNR has found, that the state is in a better position than most states — especially in the Northeast and upper Midwest where there are a reported 30,000 to 50,000 deer-vehicle collisions each year.  But, according to highway data, there have been more such collisions recently in South Carolina.
