Walhallan appeals to keep pet pigs

A Walhalla woman appealed to the city’s elected leaders last night to be allowed to keep two pot belly pigs as pets.  Rachel Pace pleaded for exemption from the city’s law against keeping livestock inside the corporate limits.  Pace lives on Morningside Drive, and the city received a complaint from a neighbor. Pace says her Vietnamese two pot belly pigs are quiet and do little except eat and sleep.  One is named “Henry.” The pigs can range from 125 to 200 pounds, but Pace says the city allows certain breeds of dogs that are much larger.  A couple of council members are sympathetic, but another—Danny Woodward—questioned if an exception is made for pigs, won’t the city be obligated to exempt someone who wants to keep a couple of cows or horses.  Mayor Edwards said, “Let’s see how other municipalities handle this.”
