Walhalla to get litter law of its own

The issue framed for the Walhalla City Council was this: “The City of Walhalla currently has no ordinance addressing, defining, and enforcing litter.” That’s now changing, with a vote last night by the council to pass a law that sets penalties and fines. Here’s the wording: “Any person violating the provisions of this article shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction shall be fined not less than $100.00 nor more than $50.00 for each offense plus court costs (or 30 days in jail, or both). As punishment, the court may also direct litter remediation or gathering labor as appropriate under the supervision of the court. In addition, the court may order any person violating the provisions of this article to pay restitution to the city or to the victims for the costs of removing or abating such litter. The municipal court shall have jurisdiction to enforce this article.”
