Walhalla hiker faces 100 miles of wilderness

Walhalla’s Wayne Garland is in Monson, Maine this afternoon and faces a difficult stretch of the last leg of his Appalachian Trail hike.  Small town Monson is known as the start of what’s considered 100 miles of wilderness, and Garlands expects he’ll need a few more weeks to finish.  Now, retired and in his mid 70s, Garland says he’s feeling good, although the calories he has burned hiking have lowered his body weight to 159 pounds.  On a frame of 5 five feet, ’10 and a half inches, Garland normally sports a 185 pound weight.  This is a rest day, before tackling the wilderness stretch.  He’s fortunate that the AT treks right through Monson, a town that caters to hikers.
