Walhalla addresses traffic problems

The South Carolina DOT will give Walhalla options for improving safety at a tricky intersection. And it’s possible that one of the solutions for N. Catherine and Broad streets are traffic lights. Currently, vehicles entering the intersection face stop signs on Broad Street. Vehicle turns are made more difficult by the hilly grade, especially traffic approaching from direction of the Performing Arts Center. City Administrator Brent Taylor says the DOT surveyed the intersection, and the city will await the results. A second traffic situation addressed during last night’s meeting of the city council committees is a complaint from John Galbreath. The recreation director said during the Travis Tritt performance officials blocked vehicle access to the city gym on N. College Street. The Tritt performance came on a night when the city gym was used for basketball games. Galbreath said a one-block section of N. College leading to the gym should be kept open in the event emergency vehicles are needed. Police Chief Sean Brinson believes stationing an officer is the answer, and he promised the city council that will be done.
