“Unusual event” at Oconee Nuclear
A Duke Energy spokeswoman says there was no fire at the Oconee Nuclear Station early today in what was declared as an “unusual event” in which personnel took Unit 2 offline. Duke’s Mikayla Kreuzberrger said the plant’s on-site fire brigade responded to an alert just before 4 am and received assistance by off-site Oconee County fire departments. Scott Krein, director of Oconee Emergency Management, said, “We were called to a fire and smoke in the building. That’s what they’re investigating.” No one was injured in the incident, and both the county and the Duke officials said there was never a danger to the general public. Kreuzberger said Unit 2 was safely shut down. Units 1 and 3 continue to generate electricity.
