Unease pervades the county public schools

A 13-year-old boy has been detained, the sheriff’s office says, after an investigation concluded that he made threats toward Walhalla Middle School  The boy, a student at Walhalla Middle, was charged with making school threats.  According to a school district statement, there were also rumors of possible threats at both West-Oak High School and Walhalla High School.  However, both incidents are determined to be false rumors, no credible information was found to support the possibility of a threat.  There was common agreement last night among county school trustees and concerned parents that some children do not grasp the seriousness when a threat is posted on a social media platform and how that threat can be disruptive to the school community and the general public.  “Everyone is scared” is how Brittney Welborne put it as she addressed last night’s board of trustees’ meeting.  Trustees responded with understanding.  District One’s Amanda Holder said, “We hear you.”  She referred to parents who implored school officials to strengthen security measures to include metal detectors and clear bag policies.
