Two inmates versus four guards in jailhouse assult

A second man has been arrested in the Oconee Sheriff’s Office investigation of a January 11 assault at the county jail, in which two inmates are accused of assaulting four correctional guards.  According to the incident report, one of the correctional officers lost consciousness and required a trip to the hospital.  Authorities say the second arrest is that of Tyler Wayne Smith. The warrant alleging assault and battery by mob accuses Smith, acting with John William Strother Evans, of “orchestrating an event in Cell Block D which resulted in four victims (correctional guards) of being assaulted.” The investigating officer consulted video footage and concluded that Smith assaulted jail guard Jared Nichols Pelfrey by punching him in the face and attempting to strangle Pelfrey.  The incident report states Smith escaped his jail cell, claiming a medical emergency.
