Trustee doubts school year will resume

Georgia has called off the rest of their public school year. A retiring bus driver in another part of the country has told us he believes he has driven his last school bus. Glum assessments are beginning to add up as to the possibility that even if the curve is flattened, the current public school year can’t be salvaged. The vice-chairman of Oconee school trustees, Joe Rukat, speaking as one board member, tells 101.7/WGOG NEWS: “I believe that it (the 2019-20 year) will not resume.” That’s Rukat’s perception. As an educator, he admits that this is frustrating. Apparently there are unanswered questions about how a shortened school year will impact the seniors of Oconee’s three high schools. Rukat says there have been some two-on-two discussions among trustees about the graduation ceremonies that are currently scheduled Saturday, May 30. He expects this will be an issue for discussion when the county trustees meet this month.
