Threats made via email

Oconee financial crime investigators learned of a scam in which threats were made by email.  According to the county sheriff’s office, the scammer notified the victim that Spyware was placed on the victim’s phone and told that Spyware provided access to emails, contacts and social media accounts.  The scammer wanted payment in Bitcoin through a link in the email.  And if payment was not made, the scammer threatened to share information with the victim’s contacts. Here’s advice from Master Deputy Jimmy Watt:  “If you receive this type of email, do not click on any links, send any payment or make any contact with the sender of the email.  Notify law enforcement immediately and do not erase any emails or delete anything you have received.”
