Third graders learn water safety skills

Oconee County third graders completed a safety and survival course last month conducted in the swimming pool of the Foothills YMCA near Seneca.  The course, made possible by the “Y'” financial arrangement with the district, ran from October 12 through March 24.  The youngsters were taught personal water safety, skills for self-rescue, safe rescue of others, and an introduction to boat safety.  Dr. Thorsland, superintendent, said the importance of the instructions reflect the fact that there are many bodies of water inside the county and the fact that the county is surrounded by water on most sides.
