The police response to Robert Talley’s death

This account is provided by Matt Patterson, chief of Westminster police:

“Officers from the Westminster Police Department responded to reports of a traffic accident yesterday afternoon on the Westminster Highway.

Officers were dispatched to the scene around 4:39pm Monday.  While enroute, officers were informed that the driver of the vehicle involved was unresponsive.  Upon arriving on scene, officers observed a tan Dodge minivan off to the left side of the road.  The Dodge minivan was the only vehicle involved in the accident.

An officer removed the driver from the vehicle and performed CPR after observing that the driver had no pulse and was not breathing.  Additional units from the Westminster Rescue Squad and Oconee County Emergency Services arrived on scene and continued life saving measures.  The driver was transported to the hospital by paramedics.  The driver was pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to information obtained during the investigation, officers determined that the driver of the Dodge minivan, who was traveling east on Westminster Highway at Walhalla Street towards Walhalla, crossed the center line of the road, went over to the left side of the road, struck a power pole, and then came to rest on the sidewalk at the intersection of Westminster Highway and Mountain View Street.

The investigation reveals that the driver suffered an apparent medical event .  The vehicle was towed away from the scene.

Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis has classified the death as natural.  The Coroner’s Office is scheduled to release that name of the deceased today.”
