The first Oconee Litter Bowl

Monday, October 21 is a day of no classes for the Oconee public schools.  But high school students–if they are so inclined–may spend the morning hours competing to determine which of the county’s three high schools can pick up the most trash on the roads around their schools.  It’s called the Inaugural Oconee Litter Bowl Competition and is arranged by the school district, the Sheriff’s Office, and Palmetto Pride.  The winning school will be awarded a Litter Bowl trophy during halftime of their school’s football game Friday, November 1.  Students who compete are encouraged to wear light colored shirts or a safety vest over their clothes.  Vests will be provided, along with trash bags, gloves, and grabbers,  Students in grades 9-12 must sign up at their schools, get a parent permission form and turn in it before participating.  To assure safety, sheriff’s officers will be on site October 21 to slow traffic in the pickup areas.  Palmetto Pride will award t-shirts to the winning school.
