The 43rd Oktoberfest will not take place

Walhalla’s large outdoor festival, Oktoberfest, will not take place this year—the result of a vote last night by the organizing committee.  The committee was practically divided down the middle as the vote went seven opposed, six in favor.  One of the disappointed committee members is Stacy Jackson, who says the committee can only look forward to next year in the hope that COVID-19 will no longer be a factor.  The third weekend of October is the traditional period for Walhalla to welcome thousands of visitors for a celebration of the city’s Germanic roots.  The main part of the festival is reserved for Sertoma Field where the beer flows, hamburgers are grilled, fireworks are set off, and kids can choose from a variety of amusement rides. A spinoff part of the weekend takes place on Main Street downtown where vendors hawk their wares.  The committee operates independently of city government, but relies on the city for assistance and logistic and, for that Jackson says, the committee is always grateful.
