Teacher’s brainstorm is a community garden

 

The elected leaders of Walhalla have been introduced to the idea of a community garden, as a way to grow food naturally and share it with those in need.  It’s the idea of school teacher Sarah Carpenter.  She told the mayor and city council that she has found a spot on W. Main Street across from the swimming pool where beds of plantings may be rented to those who’d like to try out their green thumbs.  The idea also is for community groups to garden spots on which they’ll grow produce to make available free to the general public.  Her initial budget projection is $5,500.  The hope is that government grants, such as those made available by the USDA, can assist.  Carpenter stressed another benefit of a community garden—beautification.  And Councilman Josh Roberts said, “I like it (the idea for it).
