Taking exception to hearing officer’s decision

An appeal has been filed in the Common Pleas Court to a decision this month to expel an Oconee public school student. The student, of minor age, is identified by initials only in the filing on behalf of student’s parent and natural guardian. Filed above the signature of Easley attorney James Erwin, the appeal states the following grounds: “The respondent (School District of Oconee County) failed to establish a violation of any statute, rule or regulation governing the conduct of the student or any sufficient grounds for explusion. The Respondent failed to conduct a fair hearing as provided by law.” The appeal gives no details as to why the student was expelled.  According to Erwin, he received written notice of the explusion April 10.
