Students are recognized for their wordsmanship

Talents exhibited by Walhalla High School students in writing and public speaking were highlighted during the November meeting of the Oconee School Board of Trustees. The high school is sporting winners in both categories. Walhalla swept the VFW speech writing contests among the county’s three high schools, and its first, second, and third place winners now qualify for advanced competition. Receiving certificates for their essays on “What Makes America Great” were Olivia Lee, Scarlett Monroe, and J-J Gibson. Two students in Martina Hughes’ German class were silver award winners in a declamation contest that tested accuracy, fluency, smoothness and delivery. Junior Hannah Long and sophomore Mattie Hamor were judged on the German poems they memorized and delivered.
