State health agency makes complaint to Oconee

A chemical that can emit the smell of rotten eggs is at the heart of a complaint made by the state health agency to the Oconee Joint Regional Sewer Authority.  The matter of hydrogen sulfide odor is being addressed with an attempt to correct what’s wrong, according to a recent report made to a committee of the JRSA.  The September 13 committee meeting minutes show the complaint is centered at the Davis Creek Road #1 pump station, and Seneca Light and Water is working to remedy it.  It’s the same area where a manhole collapsed in 2019 because of degradation caused by hydrogen sulfide that is produced from the breakdown of organic matter such as in swamps and sewers.
