Special court week (for Wilbanks case) continued to 2019

Here’s an announcement from Beverly Whitfield, Oconee Clerk of Court. County residents who were sent jury notices for October 22 no longer need report for a special week of the general sessions court. As many as 200 Oconeeans had been selected as the pool of jurors for the state’s case against former Walhalla Police Chief Ronald Wilbanks, but Whitfield says the term has since been continued until March. Wilbanks’ attorney Larry Brandt this morning said the trial judge in the case, Brian Gibbons of Chester, recently approved a continuance in the case because of discovery issues. In legal circles, discovery is the process a lawyer uses to get information from the opposing side before trial. Sources in the Wilbanks case indicate prosecutors from the state Attorney General’s Office will now not call the case against Wilbanks until March, at the earliest.
