South Carolina official with a word to the wise

During International Charity Fraud Awareness Week, the South Carolina secretary of state has announced a new Wise Giving Report and a Give Smart Watch List.  That official, Mark Hammond, is hopeful that South Carolinians will use the tools offered by his office to make wise giving decisions.  On his Give Smart Watch list, Hammond calls attention to 10 organizations that have either reported spending less than 40% of their total expenses on their charitable programs, or have failed to disclose to donors how they are using their money.  Those include the Childhood Leukemia Foundation of Brick, New Jersey; the Disabled Veterans National Foundation of Lanham, Maryland; and the Firefighters Charitable Foundation of Farmingdale, New York.  Donors can research charities and professional fundraisers through the Secretary of State’s website at sos.sc.gov.
