Social Security imposter likely spoofed the call

An Oconee County deputy has decided that a phone call made to a county resident by someone purporting to represent Social Social was likely to have been spoofed to make it appear that the call arrived from a local number when, in fact, they were dialing from overseas.  The call was an automated message and a reminder to the public to be beware that the Social Security Administration will never call and threaten you, demand an immediate payment, and require cash, gift card, pre-paid debit card, or a wire transfer.  Social Security recommends if you get a suspicious call, hang up.  Do not give the caller money or personal information, and report the scam at oig.ssa.gov.
