Sewer spill NO danger to Walhalla

As the result of heavy rain, 50 thousand gallons of diluted wastewater entered a reservoir near Walhalla on Monday, but the city utilities director says there’s no danger to the city’s drinking water supply. Scott Parris, the utilities superintendent, said this morning, “The spill will not reach our water intake. It actually flows into Coneross (Creek) downstream of our intake during normal operations. We only use (the Poor Farm Lake) as a source during extreme drought times.” The Oconee Joint Regional Sewer Authority reported the spill to the state. Samples are being collected for analysis. Signs have been posted in the vicinity of Flat Rock Road alerting everyone to avoid that area until South Carolina DHEC approves the cleanup. Until the notice is rescinded, people and pets near Flat Rock Road should avoid contact with the water.
