Sen. Scott’s part in new anti-lynching law

President Biden yesterday signed a bill by Sen. Tim Scott that makes lynching a federal hate crime.  Scott, South Carolina Republican, believes the country has done the right thing in passing the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching law.  “…not on behalf of Republicans or Democrats, but on behalf of all Americans, I’m proud to have played a part in passing this historic bill and making clear that we should never tolerate violence and hatred spread by those who have evil in their hearts.”  The law is named for the 14-year old who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955.  Till’s cousin says racial violence takes many forms:  “You don’t have to hang a person from a tree.  You don’t have to hang him — you can take their breath in other ways.”
