Safety enhancements ahead at popular lake spot

Oconee County leaders learned this week that Duke Energy is spearheading safety measures at a popular Lake Keowee spot that, at times turns dangerous to the swimmer. The area takes in the Fall Creek access area and what’s known as “The Rock.” Sometimes swimmers who dare to try to cross the channel don’t make it. Julian Davis, chairman of Oconee County Council, read for the record a letter from Duke Energy in which the utility announced additional signs warning of potential danger both onshore and on the island. Duke is also hopeful by next year of placing rip rap in the channel for protective purposes, but noted that there are fish considerations and the approvals are required by state and federal agencies that have a stake in the lake. Councilman Paul Cain expressed gratitude to members of the Oconee and Pickens legislative delegations for helping facilitate the safety measures, some of which will be in place for the summer season.
