Rural state road apparently last paved 60 years ago

Man-made Lake Keowee left a rural Oconee County road split in half, and two men who are among the hundred who frequent one of the remaining stretches of the Knox Road want it to be a re-paving priority of the state DOT.  Those two men showed up today at a meeting of the Oconee State “C” Committee which disburses a state fund to pave city and county roads.  “It’s terrible when it rains,” says Robbie Hawkins.  Hawkins and the other man are hopeful DOT will place a near three-mile stretch of Knox Road on a priority list.  Located off SC 188/the Keowee School Road the Knox Road, it’s believed, hasn’t seen a new cover of asphalt since at least the early 1960s.  That section of road sees about 500 vehicles a day and leads to homes and businesses.  “C” Fund Committee members Sam Dickson and Dick Cottingham indicated they are now mindful of the Knox Road situation and will look to the state to propose a solution.  A DOT official at the meeting said, meantime, his office will work on the road shoulder to reduce a water runoff problem.
