Robert “Bob” “Birddog” Hughes

Seneca- Robert “Bob” “Birddog” Lee Hughes, Jr., 92, widower of the late Dorothy Allen Hughes, passed away November 9, 2019, at Prisma Health, Cottingham House.

 

Born in the Fairview Community of Lexington County, SC, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Hughes, Sr. and Roxie Geiger Hughes.  Mr. Hughes was a United States Navy Veteran, the Owner and Operator of Hughes Equipment and Rental, a Hejaz Shriner, a former Post and State Commander of the American Legion.  Bob was a former Seneca High School Baseball Coach, Coach of Seneca American Legion Baseball, and a former Coach of Anderson College Baseball. Mr. Hughes was a graduate of Clemson College, where he was a two-sport letterman and a longtime IPTAY member. Mr. Hughes also previously served as a Councilman for the City of Seneca, Commissioner of The City of Seneca light and water, a School Board Trustee and a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church. 

 

Robert is survived by his sons, Jerald Gregg Hughes and wife Denise of Seneca, Dale Lee Hughes and wife Evie of West Union; daughter in law, Wanda Hughes of Seneca; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a special friend and co-worker, Curtis McJunkin and wife Margie of Seneca. 

 

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Hughes is preceded in death by a son, Ronald “Ronnie” Allen Hughes and a brother, Jesse Durant Hughes.

 

A Funeral Service will be held, 2:00 pm, Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Trinity Baptist Church with burial to follow at Oconee Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends 1-2 pm prior to the service at the church.

 

The family is at their respective homes.  In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bob’s memory may be made to Trinity Baptist Church Youth or Children’s fund, 504 S.
