Revised weather outlook–today and tonight

We have the following revised look at our weather today and tonight from Mark Malsick of the State Climate Office of the South Carolina DNR. “Currently the first of several upper level impulses is producing thunderstorms and heavy rain across MS-AL and western Georgia. That would be our afternoon show arriving at the GA-SC border by lunch. Thunderstorms fire up across the State after 2 PM. Strong storm cells, some possibly severe, will produce frequent lightning, heavy rain and 40-50 mph wind gusts. Hail, possibly maybe. This afternoon show winds down after sunset (8 PM-ish). A second stronger impulse creeps over the State, under the cover of darkness, starting after 2 AM. This second wave will have healthier support aloft for severe thunderstorms that could produce 50-80 mph wind gusts, more heavy rain and isolated tornadoes. Models are showing the best threat area for severe overnight storms to be south of a line between Anderson and Marlboro Counties. Upper level winds appear strongest over the coastal counties 8 AM-12PM Monday. The Storm Prediction Center, in sunny Norman Oklahoma, has increased the “moderate” risk blob over the GoMex states and the “slight” and “enhanced” remain unchanged over South Carolina until 8 AM. SPC does have a “slight” risk blob for severe storm over the coastal counties valid starting at 8 AM. Expect storms to clear the coast at or after 2 PM Monday.
