Remembering Walhalla’s Second World War dead

A project by the 1966 graduating class of Walhalla High School has found a new home for a war monument that had not fared well in the passage of time. With the cooperation of the Oconee School District, the ’66 class has re-located a monument noting the 21 Walhallans killed in the Second World War from Memorial Stadium to the social studies corridor of today’s Walhalla High School. And relatives of the deceased servicemen have a special invitation to next week’s re-dedication ceremony at the high school. The event will be 10:30 Wednesday morning, February 6. Long time Walhalla resident Lamar Bailes attended and remembers the original monument dedication that took place in 1947 in one of the end zones of the former Razorback football stadium. The original dedication took place at halftime of a Walhalla game with Easley. Jerry Dyar, county veterans affairs officer, says Walhalla’s Memorial Stadium derived its name from the 21 Walhalla victims of WW2.
