Qualifying closes with one candidate in the fold

A West Union man barely beat the deadline to sign up today to run in a special September election to fill an open seat on his town council. With an hour to go today before the books closed a resident of Schroder Street, Jason Sharpe, qualified. Sharpe goes on the September 18 ballot as the only candidate. Election officials say although there is only one ballot candidate, an election will be required to give West Union voters, if they so choose, the option of writing in another candidate of their choice.
