Public swimming to return to Walhalla

A further loosening of the hold that COVID-19 has taken was made last night with an announcement by a Walhalla city council member.  Sarai Melendez, chairwoman of the city’s recreation committee, announced that city pool on W. Main Street will open for the season Monday, June 1.  Typically, the pool operates through the summer months, until it’s time for public schools to resume.  When it comes to swimming, Walhalla remains the only one of the county’s three largest municipalities that offers public swimming.  And Walhalla’s representative to county government believes that’s important.  There is now a new YMCA facility serving Oconee County, but District Two’s Wayne McCall questioned whether how many “common people” can afford memberships to the Y.  McCall addressed his remarks during last night’s public comment session of the city council meeting.
