Public schools monitoring the conditions

Some school districts in other parts of the country called off classes today, as Old Man Winter continues a firm grip on much of the country.  Oconee public schools have a couple of days to spare, as classes for 2018 don’t start until Thursday.  Nevertheless, the Oconee district is monitoring the weather.  The plan now is start classes Thursday, as scheduled, although the district’s Steve Hanvey says will allow parents some extra time to keep their kids inside before they’ll have to board the buses.  His recommendation to parents is to dress their children in extra layers to protect against the cold.  The buses are getting some extra attention also.  According to Hanvey, they’ve been cranked a couple of times over the holidays, and personnel will be asked to report as early as 5:30 Thursday morning so that the buses will start when the bus drivers turn the keys.
