Public may take part in a regulatory process

The public gets the chance tomorrow afternoon to take part in the federal government process to consider a second license renewal for Duke Energy’s three-unit nuclear plant in Oconee County.  It’s called a scoping meeting, and there are a variety of ways in which the public can take part, as is being explained by the NRC’s Scott Burnell today on 101.7/WGOG NEWS. “Part of the NRC’s review is looking at the environmental issues involved in potentially extending Oconee’s license.  So, we are holding a meeting to give the community to tell us what sorts of environmental topics we should be looking at.”  The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will take the feedback received during the two-hour scoping meeting and will compile a report to be used in drafting an environmental impact study on extending the license an additional 20 years.
