Pilot missed his approach — finding of new report

A federal agency report says the pilot killed last month in a Lake Hartwell crash had been cleared by Anderson air traffic control, but he missed the approach several times.  Todd Carrell was killed when his twin-engine plane impacted the lake, about nine miles south of the Anderson Regional Airport.  WLHR Lake Hartwell Radio quotes the NTSB’s preliminary report as saying the air controller asked Carrell if he was having trouble with his auto-pilot or gyroscope. He told the controller he was having trouble with his gyro instrument. At the time, September 10, Carrell was flying from Florida to Anderson to attend an event.  Five days later, NTSB investigators were able to pull the plane out of water 120 feet and recover Carrell’s body.
