Pickens County businessman arrested

A Greenville County resident who is a Pickens County businessman has been arrested in an investigation by the state Department of Revenue and charged with two counts of tax evasion.  Agents from that office allege William Alexander Jr., owner of the Pumpkintown Café under-reported taxable sales on monthly sales tax returns filed from January 2018 through July 2019, failing to report a total of at least $269,360 in taxable sales and evading payment of about $18,970 in sales tax due to the state.  On Friday 75-year old Alexander was being held in the Pickens County jail, pending a bond hearing.  The potential sentence for Alexander is a maximum of two years in prison or a fine of $10 thousand per count, or both.
