Overflows continue to nag Oconee sewer facilities

Oconee Joint Regional Sewer Authority continues to experience overflows at two locations due to the flooding that occurred Thursday. The Coneross Creek Water Reclamation Facility received 5.9 inches of rain during a twelve-hour period, corresponding to a 25-to-50 year storm event in the Seneca area according to National Weather Service guidelines. At this time, diluted wastewater continues to spill at the following locations due to continued flooding and related issues:

• Flat Rock Pump Station on Flat Rock Road due to flooding at Duck Pond Reservoir

• Trunk sewer near Return Church Road near the Coneross Creek Water Reclamation Facility

An overflow that occurred at the Seneca Creek pump station ended Thursday afternoon.
The OJRSA will collect bacteria samples in the affected areas once stream flows return to normal levels. People and pets downstream of these areas should continue to avoid contact with the floodwaters until the advisory is rescinded. Drinking water quality should not be affected as a result of the overflows. An estimate of the wastewater spill volume will be determined early next week.
