“Open discussion” promised on county advertising

Chairman Julian Davis of Oconee County Council promises an open discussion next week on county expenses for advertising.  Between now and the regular third Tuesday meeting on the 15th, Davis requests his colleagues to give thought and talk with others about how the county should structure its advertising contracts. The chairman spoke last night during a special council meeting called to consider additions to the current budget.  The advertising arrangements, specifically with The Journal, are in focus as the result of several members of the public who’ve asked the council to stop its advertising with the newspaper because of the June published political cartoon which they regard was offensive to African-American sensibilities.  The newspaper promptly apologized and promised steps toward better coverage of the African-American community.  The county’s advertising practices arose during last evening’s meeting when David Root, the county attorney, referred to an email that he sent to council members on Monday.  Root indicated he’d like to see the matter cleared up.  County Administrator Amanda Brock, following Root, said adverting decisions with The Journal will be presented to the council for approval.
