One-man protest underway in Walhalla

A young Walhalla man is staging a protest in Walhalla tonight in the hopes that his demonstration will lead to the take down of a civil war monument that stands in the grass median on W. Main Street.  He apparently climbed the tall monument and has attached himself with a purple, rope-like material.  He told us that his hope is an action by the state legislature will lead to the monument removal which he sees as a symbol of slavery. City officials say as long as no laws are broken, the protester may remain.  But his protest has drawn the ire of several people who’ve come out tonight and who have gathered in front of the demonstration.  Several of them are debating the young man about what he’s doing, and it’s clear they want him to come down.  The monument is believed to belong to the group Sons of Confederate Veterans.  Our earlier post incorrectly used the name Sons of the Confederacy.
