Oconee’s Tuesday votes now certified…and official

In an approximately 30-minute meeting, Oconee election officials certified and made official the ballots cast Tuesday in the runoff election to decide the Republican nominee for U-S House of Representatives, South Carolina 3rd District.  The officials, in their capacity as the board of canvassers, counted three challenged votes cast on Tuesday and rejected two others.  By adding those three votes, winner Sheri Biggs picked up two additional votes; her opponent, Mark Burns, received one extra vote.  The final Tuesday Oconee tally is Biggs 3,674; Burns, 2,695.  One of the provisional ballots cast that, in the end, was not added to the totals was that of a Seneca voter who voted Democratic on June 11 and requested to vote Republican two weeks later.  Under voting rules, if voters cast ballots in one party’s political primary, they can’t cross party lines to vote in another party’s runoff.
