Oconee voters prefer the other guy

South Carolina Republican voters gave the nod last night to Henry McMaster, the sitting governor, and made him their nominee for the November General Election. With 100% of the votes tallied across the state, McMaster outpolled John Warren with a little more than 53.5%. The Oconee County result was practically the opposite. Voters in Oconee’s run-off election went with, John Warren, giving the challenger nearly 53.5%. Oconee voters were in agreement to award a General Election berth to incumbent Alan Wilson to run for a new term as attorney general. Wilson racked up winning percentages of nearly 65% across South Carolina and practically the same in Oconee County. The turnout statewide was only 12.62% and 16% in Oconee. Not only did Oconee out-vote the rest of the state, its election workers managed to report the county’s results either first or second among the 46 counties, according to initial indications. It’s something that Joy Scharich, the county elections director, took pride in and gives credit to a whole host of staff and volunteer workers.
