Oconee suit alleges violation of Fair Housing law

Should a property manager have made an exception to a no-pet policy for the benefit of a handicapped tenant? It’s the issue raised in a damage lawsuit filed in Oconee County last week by the South Carolina Human Affairs Commission. That lawsuit, on behalf of a woman with physical disabilities, alleges violation of the federal Fair Housing Law. According to the pleadings, because of multiple sclerosis the woman has physical disabilities. The Human Affairs Commission argues she be allowed to stay there and live there with a dog for the purposes of emotional support and therapeutic relief.
