Oconee Nuclear prepares for refueling

A 101.7/WGOG listener questions if this is the right time for Duke Energy to bring in hundreds of workers from the outside for reactor re-fueling. But Mikayla Kreuzberger at the World of Energy says, “Re-fueling our reactor is critical so that we can continue to provide essential electricity to our customers and our communities. Just like you put gas in your car and when you run out of gas you fill up your tank. We’re doing the same at the Oconee Nuclear Station….” Duke Energy also provided this statement about the re-fueling: “We are following CDC recommendations and industry best practices to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19. We take our actions very seriously, and we expect all teammates to do the same. Some additional measures we’ve taken: We are screening anyone who comes on-site through a series of questions and temperature checks every time they arrive on-site. We have placed additional restrictions on accessing key areas, such as control rooms. We have installed barriers (plexiglass) in some plant areas. The list is only some of the measures we have taken.”
