Oconee man wanted by Maryland arrested

Oconee County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Westminster man on a Fugitive from Justice charge after a traffic stop this week. 38 year old William Charles Cox, Jr. of Country Place Lane was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center around 4:04am Wednesday morning. Cox, Jr. has also been charged with Driving under Suspension, Operating an Unregistered Vehicle and Operating an Uninsured Vehicle. A deputy from the Proactive Criminal Enforcement (P.A.C.E.) Team, while on routine patrol late Tuesday evening in the area of Connor Boulevard and Rock Hill Road near Fair Play, observed a green Chevrolet Silverado displaying a 45-day dealer tag that is no longer legal under South Carolina law. The deputy initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, whereupon the vehicle drove down a 100 foot driveway near Rock Hill Road. Upon coming to a stop, the driver of the vehicle left on foot from the traffic stop. The driver, Cox, Jr., was apprehended a short distance away. A check with dispatch revealed that Cox, Jr. had a warrant out of the state of Maryland with nationwide extradition. Cox, Jr. was placed under arrest and the vehicle was towed from the scene. According to the Fugitive from Justice warrant obtained by the Sheriff’s Office, Cox, Jr. was wanted out of Maryland for First Degree Burglary/Probation Violation. At this time, Cox, Jr. remains in custody at the Oconee County Detention Center. Cox, Jr. was denied bond on the Fugitive from Justice warrant and received a combined $905 personal recognizance bond on the remaining charges.
